How Much Is That Leak Costing You? (La Puente Valley Water Rates)
Most online drip calculators use a generic national water rate. This one uses La Puente Valley County Water District tiered rates effective July 1, 2025. It shows water cost only, because La Puente sewer is a flat annual property tax charge that does not vary with usage, so a faucet leak or running toilet adds only to your water bill.

Calculate your leak cost
Why local rates matter for your calculation
Generic national calculators often use an average rate around $0.004 per gallon. LPVCWD Tier 1 works out to about $0.0029 per gallon, which is lower. That difference matters for how alarming or reassuring the result looks. The honest local picture is that LPVCWD rates are relatively modest compared to many Southern California utilities, but the volume of water a running toilet or sprinkler leak wastes over a year still adds up, especially if the leak pushes monthly usage into Tier 2 or Tier 3.
The other local fact worth knowing: irrigation leaks and sprinkler leaks are common in La Puente’s year-round growing climate, and because outdoor water drains to the yard rather than the sewer, there is no sewer component to an outdoor leak cost at all. Read the high water bill triage post for the full step-by-step investigation order, from toilets through meter test through irrigation isolation.
La Puente water cost questions
How much does a dripping faucet cost per year in La Puente?
A faucet dripping at 60 drips per minute loses about 5.7 gallons per day, or roughly 2,080 gallons per year. At La Puente Valley Water District Tier 1 rates of $2.16 per CCF, that works out to approximately $6 per year, which sounds small. A faster drip at 120 drips per minute doubles that, and a fully running faucet is in a different category entirely. The calculator above shows the real number for your specific drip rate.
Does a water leak raise sewer bills in La Puente?
No. La Puente sewer service is billed by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts as a flat annual fee on your LA County property tax bill. It is not based on how much water you use. An indoor leak, an outdoor irrigation leak, or a pool refill all appear only on your LPVCWD water bill, never on a separate volumetric sewer charge.
What are La Puente Valley Water District rates?
Effective July 1, 2025, LPVCWD single-family residential rates include a monthly service charge of $21.08 plus volumetric tiers: Tier 1 at $2.16 per CCF for the first 8 CCF per month, Tier 2 at $3.34 per CCF for 9 to 14 CCF, and Tier 3 at $4.49 per CCF for 15 CCF and above. One CCF equals 748 gallons. Rates are set to step up again on July 1, 2026.
Why does La Puente have tiered water pricing?
LPVCWD uses a tiered rate structure to encourage conservation. Households that use less water in the lower tiers pay a lower rate per unit. A leak that pushes monthly use above 8 CCF or 14 CCF moves the household into a higher tier, where every additional gallon costs more. The calculator shows when a leak is large enough to trigger a tier jump.
